Turning a graduation project into a career

Some graduation projects end with a report. For Niels Flikweert, student at the TU Delft, it marked the start of his career at Huisman. After completing his research into vibration isolation during offshore monopile installation, he joined the company as a Mechanical Design Engineer.

Niels started at Huisman for his research project which consisted of investigating how vibrations generated from monopile installation can be isolated to prevent damaging the installation equipment and vessels. He researched four possible methods, and further designed a model which could be a possible solution.

The project results
By altering the dimensions of a Helmholtz resonator you can tune it to a specific vibration frequency, to which it will generate an opposing signal. The two then cancel each other out which reduces the overall levels and energy transfers. Real-world operations however need a broader range of frequencies to be successful. His most valuable lesson throughout was to break down complex engineering systems to analyse thoroughly. And that despite the theoretical potential, the outcome may be less than expected.

The start of a professional working career
During his studies and research he discovered a strong passion for offshore engineering. So much so that after graduation Niels continued his professional career with Huisman and now works as a Mechanical Design Engineer. In this role he is involved throughout the entire project, from initial design phase to realisation. Knowing he helped build the large equipment, produced in-house brings him great fulfilment.
